What Is A Gastric Balloon?

A gastric balloon, also known as an Intragastric balloon or a stomach balloon is an inflatable medical device temporarily placed into the stomach to occupy about one-third of the stomach cavity.

Benefits Of A Gastric Balloon

  • It is a 15-minute non-invasive outpatient weight loss procedure (weight loss procedure without surgery). This means, there are no incisions or hospitalization required.
  • It occupies about one-third of the stomach cavity which decreases the quantity of food that the stomach can hold.
  • The presence of the gastric balloon interferes with stomach emptying so that food stays in the stomach longer.
  • It promotes eating smaller quantities of food.

How Much Weight Can Be Lost With This Weight Loss Program?

It is important to understand that the balloon is a medical device to help reach weight loss and must be used with a planned diet, exercise and a behaviour modification program. *(We offer these in our weight loss clinic

The amount of weight you lose and maintain will depend on how closely you follow your diet and adopt long-term lifestyle changes.

Average weight losses of approximately 16 to 25 kg have been reported with the Spatz gastric balloon. There is a possibility that you will lose only a small amount of weight or lose no weight at all while using the balloon. Your commitment to dietary and behavioural changes will determine your success.

There is also a chance that unhealthy, uncontrolled weight loss can occur and create adverse health consequences. Ensure to have a consultation with your gastroenterologist about this.

What side effects do I expect?

It is very likely that the presence of the balloon in the stomach will cause nauseavomiting or abdominal pain of varying intensity for a few days after placement. However, your gastroenterologist will prescribe medications to help minimize these potential side effects.

These side effects can persist during the first week. After the first week, once you start eating regularly, side effects will be related to the quantity or type of food you eat.
You may experience bloatingbelching, pain, nausea, vomiting or heartburn related to eating incorrectly.

How Long Does The Gastric Balloon Stay In The Stomach?

The Balloon can be placed in the stomach for up to twelve months. While using the balloon, your gastroenterologist will prescribe some oral medications to reduce your stomach acid.

This may reduce the possibility of stomach irritation and damage to the balloon.

Can I Go About My Daily Activities After The Balloon Has Been Placed?

During the first week of the procedure, you should not follow your routine activities. Once your body has adjusted to the balloon you can continue your normal activities.

Starting a regular exercise program is highly recommended and will improve your success.
