Even as we continue to celebrate ‘Black don’t crack’, let’s keep in mind the wisdom laden words of this all-time fashion icon – “Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty.” ~ Coco Chanel
Truer words have never been said. A lot of intentional moves need to be made by you to have great skin as you age (and remember, we age daily).
So today, we’ll take a look at how to adopt an appropriate daily skincare routine.
Note: These are merely recommendations and suggestions and do not in any way rule out the need for a professional skin analysis with a skincare routine plan tailored to your skin needs at a particular time.
There are 4 major skin types: Normal, Oily, Dry and Combination. To know more about your skin type, click here. Note that your body and face may have varying skin types. This post, however, focuses on the face.
Irrespective of your skin type, there are things you just have to do for your skin.
These include (but are not limited to):
- Cleansing
- Exfoliating
- Moisturizing
- Protecting
For ease of use, you may choose to use a single product with multiple functions E.g, a cleansing wash that still exfoliates; sun protection that equally moisturizes.

Now, depending on your skin needs, you may need to include a product that addresses that particular concern. E.g, acne-prone skin would need some anti-acne treatment; aging & wrinkling skin would require an antioxidant and a treatment to reduce wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin (this treatment would equally be required for skin above 30 years of age).
Now that we know what the basic routine should contain, we can now consider those products that give our faces some extra TLC. A toner (this becomes a necessary extra when you are not using a pH stabilizing cleansing wash); A face mask; beauty pads (cleansing, glow, antioxidant e.t.c)
