What Is Laser Lipolysis? Laser lipolysis is a minimally invasive procedure that involves the use of ultra-thin optical fibers with a laser tip placed under the skin (superficial hypodermis) to selectively break down fat and cause skin retraction.
How Does It Work?
When in direct contact with subcutaneous tissue, the energy released by the laser causes irreversible damage to fat cells, along with heat damage to the collagen fibers in the dermis, which stimulates the formation of new collagen and, later, a skin-tightening effect.
What Areas Can Be Treated With Laser Lipolysis?
Laser lipolysis can be performed on any area with unwanted pockets of fat or skin laxity. Commonly treated areas include:
- Mid-face
- Jawline
- Double chin
- Nasolabial lines
- Marionette lines
- Neckline
- Arms
- Breasts (Gynecomastia in men)
- Abdomen
- Back
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Knees
Are There Side Effects?
Laser lipolysis is a safe procedure, but it does have some possible side effects, including but not limited to:
- Swelling
- Pain
- Skin discoloration on treated areas
- Temporary numbness in the treated areas
- Contour irregularities
- Burns
- Risk of infection
- Risk of scarring
What Are the Advantages of Laser Lipolysis Over Liposuction?
The advantages of laser lipolysis over traditional liposuction include:
- Shorter recovery time
- Milder trauma to the body
- Decreased blood loss
- Less pain, bruising, and post-procedure swelling
- The added benefit of skin retraction and improvement in skin elasticity, achieving a skin-tightening effect

What Is the Recovery Time for Laser Lipolysis?
Downtime and recovery time vary on a case-by-case basis. However, this procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day.
When Will the Results Set In?
Results become visible almost immediately, but it will take about two weeks to see some improvement in skin tone and quality. The results become more apparent over the subsequent months as your body’s lymphatic system naturally eliminates destroyed fat cells and the continuous formation of collagen takes place.
Is Laser Lipolysis a Permanent Procedure?
Although the targeted fat cells are permanently destroyed, the results are not permanent due to subsequent weight gain, lifestyle changes, and other factors that contribute to the enlargement of remaining fat cells. However, results can last for several years.
Can Everyone Undergo Laser Lipolysis?
This procedure is NOT recommended for patients who:
- Are likely to be pregnant, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding
- Have open skin wounds or active skin infections
- Have autoimmune conditions
- Have chronic conditions like kidney or liver disorders
