Staying Adequately Hydrated

Hydration simply means to replace the water in the body through drinking water, eating food and fruits with high water content.

Our body depends on water to survive because every cell, tissue, and organ needs water to function properly. For example, your body uses water to maintain its temperature, remove waste products and aid biochemical processes.

Water is simply necessary for the optimal health of your entire body including your hair and skin. Just think about it…drinking your way to supple skin and beautiful hair…(awesome!!!)

If your skin is not getting a sufficient amount of water, the lack of hydration will present itself by making your skin feel and look dry, dull, tight and flaky. Dry skin has less resilience and is more prone to premature wrinkling, disorders like Eczema, Psoriasis.

Dry skin is not the same as dehydrated skin. Here are some differences:

Dry Skin

  • Lacks oil.
  • It’s a skin type.
  • Feels dry all over (including hands, feet, and scalp).
  • Requires oil-rich products e.g, Ceramides.

Dehydrated Skin

  • Lacks water.
  • It’s a skin condition.
  • Changes with diet, skincare products, and environment.
  • It requires water-rich products e.g, Hyaluronic acid.

A simple way of checking if you’re well-hydrated is the color of your urine. If your urine is colorless or light yellow, you are well hydrated. If your urine is a dark yellow or amber color, you may be dehydrated.

You may ask, “How much water do I need to take in a day? “. Well, on average this is about 3 liters. However, this volume may be increased based on the weather, physical activity like a workout or aerobic session.

So, if you go on a vacay to the Yankari game reserve in Bauchi, Nigeria or decide to spend some days shopping in Dubai, you should include a water bottle in your backpacks or totes because your usual daily water requirement would increase.

We may need to clarify some things at this point. Energy drinks, fizzy drinks, alcoholic drinks, and sodas do not account for the amount of water you should drink in a day. On the contrary, the continuous intake of either of these without a commensurate intake of water would eventually get you dehydrated. Sounds like bad news for you soda lovers right?…. well, let’s just say that we may need to pipe down on some of those for the love of supple skin.

We know that no beauty product can be used to cover up insufficient water intake, however, in the face of harsh and extremely drying weather conditions, some would help preserve your skin and leave it relatively hydrated.  Below is one of our in-house hydrating products.
